Chateau de Malmaison was the surprise purchase she made for her all conquering lover to celebrate his campaign victory in Egypt. On return the diminutive despot was enraged to find she’d spent his recently acquired fortune on its spectacular makeover. Malmaison hotels, bars and brasseries carry on where Josephine left off.
